My career in finance didn't start at a university, at a 'Big 4' firm or in a plush city office. It started on the back of a bin lorry in Northamptonshire, driven by a desire for more than my working-class background had offered.
I'd always had a knack for numbers and loved business, but it was in a previous career that it really clicked. I was a tyre fitter, newly promoted to a Branch Manager, brought in to manage a failing tyre garage and, by getting stuck into the business, I quadrupled its turnover in just three months and was named Branch Manager of the Year.
Years later and now having been a binman for a decade, I had a desire for that success again. I decided that this binman, approaching middle age, was going to become a fully qualified CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) accountant! That meant balancing full-time work, and study with a family. I worked from shop floors to supply chain, distribution and eventually finance in a builder’s merchant alongside years of CIMA studies and 16 exams. Eventually, not only did I earn a place advising numerous Directors of a global prestige car manufacturer, but also became the CIMA Student of The Year!
